How to Fix Carpet Wrinkles?

How to Fix Carpet Wrinkles?

When it comes to wall-to-wall carpet installation, carpet wrinkles are usually the result of poor carpet installation. Not only are they annoying to look at, but they can also be a hazard. Wrinkles are also the first to wear out in a carpet, and they never really disappear unless you decide to do something about them. While poor installation is to blame for wrinkles on wall-to-wall carpets, there are other factors that may contribute to their appearance. For instance, a carpet that has not acclimated to the room temperature before it drops will most likely have a wrinkle or two at the end of the day. Fortunately, carpet wrinkles can be fixed without necessarily having to call in the professionals. Do you know how to fix carpet wrinkles? A good rule of thumb to prevent carpet wrinkles is to never install one without using a stretcher.

How to Fix Carpet Wrinkles

What is a Carpet Stretcher?

A carpet stretcher resembles large sponge mops. They have a head (the part that looks like a sponge mop) that is fitted with pointy, sharp teeth, which are used to hold on to the carpet, and a lever that aids in moving the teeth in order to allow you to pull the carpet in one direction.

Carpet stretchers can be rented, so you don’t necessarily need to purchase one to assist in fixing a wrinkle on your wall-to-wall carpet. You will also need a knee-kicker and a carpet knife, and combined; the tools will cost you less than $50 to rent.

How to Fix Carpet Wrinkles

Step 1

Place the carpet stretcher onto your carpet and adjust its teeth until they are positioned to firmly grip the carpet’s pile. Next, remove the tack strips that hold your wall-to-wall carpet down, then sink the stretcher’s teeth into the portion of carpet that needs pulling.

Step 2

Operate the lever of the stretcher power and slowly allow the carpet to be stretched out. Ensure it has a good grip on the pile, then slowly work the lever and pull the carpet in the direction away from the wrinkle. Do this until the wrinkle completely disappears, then move to the next step.

Step 3

Now get the knee-kicker, place it on each side of the carpet stretcher, and use it to pin back the carpet onto the tack strip. Make sure the wrinkle is completely removed before pinning back the carpet onto the tack strip to avoid having to do the job all over again.

Step 4

Once it is firmly pinned back down, curl the excess length of carpet that’s left at the baseboard in your direction, and use a carpet knife to trim it off. Make the cut as even as you can to avoid having jagged carpet edges. It is advisable to trim it off from the back side of the carpet (the side that faces the floor).

In Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know how to fix carpet wrinkles! As you can see, carpet wrinkles are quite easy to get rid of provided you have the right tools. However, you can avoid them altogether by getting your carpets installed correctly, and letting it acclimate to your home’s temperature.
